More about Dr. Upshur

  • Dr. Emily Upshur’s therapeutic approach is thoughtful, collaborative, and deeply grounded in developmental and trauma-informed care. She understands emotional and behavioral challenges within the broader context of relationships, life transitions, and each person’s lived experience, rather than as isolated symptoms to be treated.

Her work integrates evidence-based practices, including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, attachment-based, and family systems approaches, and is carefully tailored to the needs of each individual and family. Drawing on specialized training in trauma-focused and parent–child interventions, Dr. Upshur places particular emphasis on safety, regulation, and connection as foundations for meaningful change.

Central to her approach is the belief that healing happens in relationship. Whether working with children, parents, or adults, Dr. Upshur creates a space that feels both supportive and intellectually rigorous, helping clients build insight, resilience, and practical tools they can carry beyond the therapy room. Her goal is not only symptom relief, but lasting growth that honors where people have been and where they hope to go.

  • Dr. Emily Upshur received her doctoral training in Clinical Psychology at the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York (CUNY), one of the nation’s leading public research institutions. She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, along with a Master of Arts and Master of Philosophy, with advanced training in assessment, psychotherapy, and trauma-informed care across the lifespan.

Prior to her doctoral work, Dr. Upshur earned a Master of Arts in Clinical Child Developmental Psychology from Tufts University’s Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development, where her studies focused on early development, family systems, and the social and emotional lives of children.

She completed her undergraduate education at Bates College, graduating with honors, where her early academic work reflected a longstanding interest in culture, identity, and family systems.

Together, Dr. Upshur’s education reflects a strong foundation in developmental science, clinical research, and applied psychology, informing her thoughtful, evidence-based approach to working with children, parents, and families.

  • Dr. Emily Upshur has completed extensive postgraduate training in trauma-informed, evidence-based, and developmentally grounded treatment models for children, adolescents, adults, and families. Her advanced clinical training includes certification and specialization in nationally recognized approaches such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Child–Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competency (ARC), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Ross Greene’s Collaborative Problem-Solving approach.

She completed her APA-accredited predoctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center and Mount Sinai–affiliated hospitals in New York City, where she provided care in outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and community-based settings. During this time, she also served in leadership roles within SAMHSA- and National Child Traumatic Stress Network–funded programs, contributing to clinical training, research, and program development focused on children and families impacted by trauma.

Dr. Upshur is a New York State Licensed Psychologist and a certified trauma-based assessor (CANS). She continues to engage in advanced training and consultation, including specialized work in Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE), cognitive-behavioral interventions, mindfulness-based approaches, and parent–child dyadic treatment.
